I was lucky enough to see Mal Jones’s Koi paintings at Washington DC’s Artomatic show several years ago. An entire room was hung with adorable (but not over cute), almost comic-like Koi paintings and even had a wall painted with the little creature. It was mesmerizing and memorable, which is why last year at SPX I started squealing mid-aisle when I realized the little Koi had been turned into a comic and had a name, Sam Koi.
Luckily, Sam Koi’s creator did not run for cover, but instead signed an “I love Mal Jones” postcard for me. It was then I found out that Sam Koi would be available as a web comic as well, and it is beautiful. The stories are artwork and the comic blurs the lines between what most people think of as “comics” and “fine art.”
Don’t take my word for it though, go see for yourself. As of this post, there are three Sam Koi episodes available. I’m eagerly awaiting the next installment!
