Death and the Maiden

Friday, January 9th, 2009

One of my favourite web comics is being re-published in blog form and I am so excited! Death and the Maiden was one happy piece of solace I had during a rather stressful time a year or so ago. I hope you will all enjoy it as much as I did and still do! Waiting for the next update always tries my patience; but, to me, that is a sign of good storytelling. I higly recommend starting from this beginning with The Prologue.

Square Cat Comics and the Honorable Mentions

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Since starting a2alien, I’ve begun to appreciate more and more the hard work that goes into consistently creating comics, web or otherwise. There are quite a few comic artists whose hard work inspired me to begin a2alien in the first place. So, I’ve decided to share some of my favourites with you over the next several weeks. First up, Squarecat!

I have been following Squarecat Comics for several years now. Sometimes I swear I’ve been living the same week as Jennifer O. Witness the yen for chocolate milk, the ice cream in winter, or the Red Sox in action! I am really hoping that she decides to return to SPX one of these years. I was lucky enough to buy vol. 1 & 2 of Squarecat in 2006 and hope to see vol. 3 sometime soon.

As if comics weren’t enough, she and her oft featured boyfriend, Matt, are creating 52 songs in 52 weeks. Check out the Honorable Mentions for more. I am completely amazed by this project. Seriously, when do they find the time?! :)

XL Comics

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

EDIT :: Sad news. XL Comics is no longer available due to funding issues. Anyone with extra cash should get in touch with Tim (see the comments) Maybe we can bring them back!

I’m not sure when or how I stumbled upon XL Comics, but I immediately subscribed to the RSS feed and have been happily enjoying it ever since. Despite Tim’s assertion that he can’t draw, the magic marker drawings are wonderful and inspired. Also, it’s funny as heck.

XL Comics is based on Extra Large, a radio show, with Andy and Tim on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tony is my favourite character so far. Forget “Danger,” deranged is the new middle initial .. D is for deranged!

Ted Dead: Just your everyday zombie …

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

An old coworker and friend of mine dropped by the a2alien table at SPX. He introduced me to a friend of his who was helping him publish a book. We all chatted for a while and even talked about how easy it is for anyone who has a little bit of persistence to put together a web comic. The next thing I knew, I received a suggestion to fan the Ted Dead comic on facebook. You guessed it, they left SPX and created a new comic!. I have to admit, I was pretty darn impressed! People with that kind of go get ’em, just do it attitude always amaze me.

So, I present to you Ted Dead, just your everyday zombie by Cal Miller and Greg Bogle. Ted Dead takes place in an office where Ted (just your everyday zombie) battles his need for brains while his coworkers fend him off with head cheese and obnoxious customers. In just a few months, they have already created a comic that gets better and better. Of course, since Cal and Greg just started Zilyon publishing and their first book, Het Madden, A Zombie Perspective is now available via both Create Space and Amazon it really shouldn’t be much of surprise that the writing is sharp and the jokes are funny.

So, if you’re looking for a Zombie comic, then look no further .. go check out Ted Dead!

a²alien at S.P.A.C.E. this weekend!

Monday, April 19th, 2010

SPACE -- April 24 and 25, 2010Hello everyone! Just wanted to remind you that the a²alien will be at the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo in Columbus, Ohio this weekend. As usual, I’ll be there with RS Harvey, my partner in creative adventures. He’ll have screen-prints and comics journalling his experiences in Australia. The a²alien will be present in the form of mini-comics, figurines, screen-prints and upcycled buttons! There might be a painting or two as well.

This will be our first year attending S.P.A.C.E. and I’m super excited! I’ve heard wonderful things about this expo and know it will live up to my expectations. Plus, some of my favourite web comic artists will be there too! I’m hoping to control my wallet; but, even if not, it will be worth it!

And, last but not least .. there will be a²antennae! I’ve made up a whole batch with various colours in addition to the usual silver sparklies. Drop by early to get your fav!

So, hope to see you there!
